TURF SECURITY

There is a very important aspect to remember about Theft here in Kymer
which is very different from theft in the real world.

In the *real world* a thief can:
pick a lock
break a window
break a door
(etc.)

In the RW you can set up elaborate alarm systems, get guard dogs or put security gates around your home BUT this won't necessarily keep your home safe.

Here in Kymer, a thief can only steal from your turf IF YOU LET THEM!
There are many security measures in place to keep your turf and your items safe.
If you use these measures, you and your items will be safe.
If you DON'T... it would be like putting an advertisement in your locale newspaper telling all thieves that you will have your home open to them and please feel free to take whatever they like.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

The first line of defense is your turf name.
If someone doesn't know the name, they can't enter your turf in the first place.

Choose a turf name other than the default name.
Why make it easy for them to guess the name of your turf?

Don't tell everyone your turf name.
Don't stand at the elevators and tell everyone there what the name is.
You might end up with some unwanted and unexpected visitors.

Of course, if you have a game turf, a shop or a turf that you are wanting everyone to come to, this is slightly different and it makes the other security measures even more important.  But for your home, why take chances?  Safeguard your turf address like you would your RW home address.

NOTE: Someone can only enter into a turf if an owner is in the turf.

LOCK IT UP!

Here, you have total control over how many people can or can not enter your turf along with when they can enter.

To start with, no one can enter your turf unless you (or an owner) is there.

Keep out unwanted visitors by locking the doors!

floor.gif (2249 bytes)
When you click on the floor (or one of the walls) this is the menu that you see.

Choose turf and this menu comes up:
access_control.gif (3490 bytes)

Choose Access Control and you get this screen:
allow_guests.gif (4350 bytes)

Notice that the Allow guests box is NOT checked.
This means NO ONE (except owners) can enter into this turf.

Remove guests when all owners exit is a good box to keep checked.
Why?
If you crash or log out, the people in your turf will be removed.
This gives you a way to easily kick an unwanted visitor out should one get in.

Keeping your turf locked is just one of the steps.
The other important option deals with the room itself.

Once again, clicking on the floor or walls will give you this menu.

This time, let's click on the "Room" option and see what we get:

room.gif (3737 bytes)

Next, choose the Access Control:
room_access.gif (5420 bytes)

This screen gives you many options:
Allow guests in this room: if it is checked, others can enter the room.  If not, they can't.
Maximum avatars: do you want to allow people on the ground?  If not, set it to zero (0).
How many ghosts will you allow?  This can also be set to zero.

If you want to totally lock up a room, set the options to look like this:

no_room.gif (4881 bytes)

You (and any other owners) will still be able to enter the room but no one else will be.

Having visitors?
"Unlock" your turf and your room
BUT
as soon as your visitors arrive, lock it back up again!
Your guests will be able to stay but no one else can enter.

Want to show off your turf?
Set the number of avatars to 0 (zero)
this will let people see as a ghost only.
Unlock and relock the turf right away also like mentioned before.

Game Hosts:
If you simply MUST have items down on the floor,
set the locale to ZERO Avi's once the player/winner/etc. has deghosted.
This way, if someone crashes, a lurking thief won't be able to deghost and get the game items/prizes/etc.

REMOVING SOMEONE FROM YOUR TURF

room.gif (3744 bytes)

The "Remove all guests" and the "Remove guest" options are wonderful additions to the turf's.
The names are pretty self explanatory:
Remove all guests: click this and everyone that is not an owner will be removed.
Remove guest: use this if you want to kick 1 specific person out.  You will need to type in their name to use this option though.

Why is it better to simply log out if you think someone has gotten into your turf that shouldn't be there?
Reaching up and clicking the X to exit DS is much faster than clicking on the wall or floor, choosing "Room" and then "Remove all guests."
These options can be pretty handy at other times though, so don't forget that they are here for your use!

GLUE, GLUE, GLUE, GLUE, GLUE

Glue is such a wonderful thing!
Not only is it wonderful, but it is easy to use.
No messy liquids, no horrible smells.
Simply click the item and you will get this menu:

glue.gif (1728 bytes)
Click on the "Glue Down" and the item will be glued!

No one but a turf owner can glue or unglue an item.

GLUE EVERYTHING DOWN
A thief can't walk in and steal something if it is glued down.

DON'T LEAVE ITEMS IN CHESTS
If a thief enters your turf, they can open the chest and take what is inside it (unless it is a lockable and the key is glued down).

ADDING PEOPLE TO YOUR LEASE

Would you hand a stranger the keys to your RW home?
Would you invite them to live with you?
Would you trust them with all of your worldly belongings?

Probably not.

So why do that here?

Be CAREFUL who you add to your lease.

Your newest best friend may not be your best friend for long.
The new "love of your life" may not stay that way.

Often times, the people that "take" items from a turf are on that turf lease.
Unfortunately, friendships don't always end nicely
and love relationships can be a bit messy when they end.

The safest way to do it, if you want to share a turf, is to get a new turf.
Only put items in there that you don't mind loosing.

Please understand, no one can walk into a turf and know who "owns" which item.
One thing that we don't have here that the RW has is a purchase receipt. <g>
There is no way of telling who an item is owned by, who this person gave that item to, etc.

If you want to add someone to your lease, just be aware that you are taking a risk.

OTHER SAFE GUARDS

Most thieves work by taking their "victim" by surprise.
allow_guests.gif (4350 bytes)
Make sure you have the "Remove guests when all owners exit" option checked like this picture shows.
If you forget to lock your turf and suddenly realize there is a ghost (or avatar) in there with you,
don't take the time to see who the person is, just log off.  The person will be instantly kicked out of your turf (hopefully before they can grab anything).

Also, an accomplice might have ghosted into a different room.
By logging out, both thieves are immediately removed from the turf.

If you have friends in your turf when this happens, don't be concerned.
Log right back on and let them know what happened.

Another thing to be aware of is that NO ONE can keep you LOCKED in their turf.
If someone tries to do this, simply log out of WA.
When you return, you will be at the elevators.

Take RESPONSIBILITY for your actions (or lack of actions).
Use your common sense and remember to take the simple precautions that will keep you and your items safe.

Remember,
Thieves CAN NOT steal unless YOU LET THEM.

It's your "stuff" and your choice.

Please use your back button to return to the security page.
