Nan's Ghost
My mum died in 1991 of pneumonia. At first it looked like she would
recover. Three days after seeing my youngest son, Dean (who was 4 days old), mum
died.
It was a tough time as I started divorce proceedings in march that same year and had 4
kids to bring up along.
In may the next year, 1992, I got the divorce (this is important as you will see).
Later that month, my eldest son, Clifford, got pneumonia. This was a great worry as
the memories of mum was still raw in our minds. Lucky he recovered and was sent home from
hospital pale but well.
About 2 weeks later my friend "K" called round and was talking to Cliff about
school and such while I was in the other room seeing to the 2 youngest children (Michael
and Dean). K told me Cliff had told her he saw his Nan last night.
Later that night when the house was quiet, I sat with Cliff and asked him
what he saw. He said, "When I went to bed, I was about to go to sleep and saw
Nan by the window. I closed my eyes when I opened them again Nan was gone. I wasn't scared
but wish she had stayed." He never knew about ghosts, spirits etc as he was
only 5 1/2.
About a week later he said, "Mum, I'm worried about my Nan." I asked why.
He told me, "Last night I saw Nan again. There was a light coming from behind
her like a big car light and she said 'I'm glad your are well now son as you have to look
after your brothers sister and your mum as you are the eldest now.' Then when I went
to hold her hand, my hand went through her and she started to disappear into the
light."
I asked if he was worried that he saw his Nan. He said,
"No, Nan said I'm the eldest but I'm not. Berenice is (she is his sister
and the eldest child). Nan seems confused and I don't understand why I couldn't hold her
hand." I had to explain that it was Nan's spirit he saw.
Last year, 2001, I was speaking to my older half brother, Ian, about a ghost documentary I
saw a few days before. We got on to the subject of mum visiting Cliff. When I
said I didn't understand mums message about Cliff being the eldest as berenice is, he said
when his dad died mum said to him, "You are the eldest boy in the house, therefore
the man of the house." I then remembered my mum saying that to my brother,
John, when I was 11 and my dad died. John was 4 then.
Ian said it was mums belief that the eldest boy was the man of the house. Mum wasn't
alive when I started divorcing my husband and cliff was the eldest boy. We believe
it was mums way of letting us know it was her, if only we had made the connection sooner.
Clifford is 16 now and still remembers the visits but doesn't like to talk about them.
He says he wasn't afraid as it was his Nan and he didn't know it was a ghost.
He also said if he was to see one now he would probably be scared. I think it was a
nice way to let us know it was truly mum there that night and have never doubted Clifford.
