The Helpful Spirit

Note: At first glance, the light area looks like it could be caused by sun on the snow.  If you will look again, it raises above the snowline AND also appears in front of his jacket.

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I went to Lake Tahoe. The trip was relatively uneventful.  On the way home my husband had bought a plastic sled and insisted on finding a spot on Highway US 50 to try it out.  We found a spot late in the morning of our 4 hour trip home. It was back behind some trees and looked as if it was a frequented spot for sledders because of the tracks left behind going down the huge hill. It was Monday and the highway was relatively deserted and no one was on or near the hill.

My husband, being adventurous decided to take our daughter down the hill with him.  I protested but he talked me into it.  As he climbed the steep hill I yelled after him to stop, that he was already to high up.  He called down to me saying,"don't worry, I know what I am doing."  This coming from a man that grew up in Florida and this had only been his third time seeing snow.

He jumped on the sled with my daughter in his lap and started down the hill.  To my terror they lost control.  As my husband flew forward, starting to tumble, and roll down the hill.  He was able, to my amazement, hold up our daughter with one hand.  She never touched the snow, my husband came to a stop with his face buried.  He looked up at me stunned.

I ran over and grabbed my daughter who was unscathed.  My husband got up and said,"did you get a picture?"  At that point I took his picture, though I was pretty mad at him. Then I march away back to the car still holding onto my baby thankful she was not dead!

On the way home we discussed the incident and my husband told me that he felt like something helped him hold her up and that she suddenly became really light.   I laughed at him and dismissed the entire incident.  When we developed the roll of film this picture really stood out.  It is the one I took 20 seconds after they came down the hill.  The rest of the roll is normal as is the other pictures I took of us in the snow that day, none of them had smog.  By the way, my husband had a bruised hip and shoulder, as well as a sprained ankle. Subsequently, he was on crutches for two weeks.
