A Grandfathers Farewell
I had a very interesting, emotional experience about 11 years ago. My
grandfather, who was dying of cancer, came to visit my parents one final time. It was a
very hard time for the whole family; it quickly became apparent that Grandpa was not going
to live to make the journey back home.
My folks were working with our local hospice, so that Grandpa could die at their house,
surrounded by loved ones, instead of in a cold, impersonal hospital. I was living with a
boyfriend at the time, on the other side of town. I have to admit that I did not handle my
grandfather's illness very well, I avoided my parents house so that I did not have to see
him like that - he was so sick, there wasn't much trace of the man I knew and loved so
much.
The morning that my grandfather passed away, I was sound asleep in my bed on the other
side of town. I remember very clearly being asleep, yet everything seemed so very real,
not at all like a dream. My grandfather was suddenly sitting on the edge of my bed,
holding my hand. He told me that I should not worry, he was okay, and that he loved me. I
can still remember feeling the weight of him sitting on my bed. Just as he finished
telling me that he loved me, the telephone rang and it was my father, calling to tell me
that my beloved grandfather was gone.
It has been eleven years since this incident, and I still cannot talk about it without
crying. I don't care what the skeptics say; I know in my heart that he was there,
comforting me.
