Grandfathers Goodbye
As I read the story Grandfathers Farewell, I started to cry. See I had the same experience. I, however, was only 10 at the time. I had lived with my mother and my older sister at my grandparents until I was about 5, due to the fact that my father was in the Marines. I grew close to my grandparents and was known to the rest of my family as grandpa's little girl. I did everything with my pap. Even after I had moved out of the house I spent almost everyday with him. When I was about 8 my pap had a stroke which left him completly paralyzed on his left side. Again when I was 10 he had another stroke and this time the doctors said that he had about a month to live.
We were all very grief stricken and didn't quite know what to do. Since my aunt is a nurse, we decided to have him stay at home until he passed. He couldn't even talk towards the end of the 2nd week. I remember just sitting at his bedside talking to him and telling him that everything was going to be ok and that I loved him very much. My sister, aunt, and my gradmother all took turns one night keeping an eye on him. It was my aunts turn and after about an hour or so she came running out yelling and crying. She proceded to tell my sister and my gram that my pap had stopped breathing. I refused to go see him at the viewing but my cousin coaxed me into it.
The night that we buried him I had a dream. I remember being on some
street in the middle of the night under a street light. Then I saw my pap walking across
the street towards me. He looked handsome as ever, he was dressed in an all white suit. He
walked up to me and told me that everything was going to be ok and that I was to take care
of my grandmother. He told me that he loved me very much and he would see me again. Then
he pulled a single red rose from his behind his back and gave me a kiss and walked away. I
will never forget that dream and I know that he is watching me all the time.
