Lareese and Lil Bit

Greetings!  I am Lareese and this is my little one, Lil Bit.
I will be your tour guide through our Nursery.

I think everyone knows that Dragons hatch from eggs.
Of course the time it takes for a hatchling to emerge depends on the type of dragon.
Here, at our Lair, we have many different types of Dragons so the hatching time varies tremendously.

Hatching time is very exciting around here.
Despite popular opinion, Dragons are very devoted to their young ones
and the hatching is considered a very special event!
Humans don't often get to be a witness to this,
but I think you are in luck today!
We have an egg that is just about to hatch and
if you watch closely, you will get to see one emerge!

The Hatchling is about to emerge from its egg!

As you can see, new hatchlings can be a bit on the shy side!
But as they get older, they usually come out of their shell
and you will find them to be quite inquisitive!

One of the first things that the little ones learn is how to breath fire correctly.
This training starts when they are about three months old (which is
when the fire gland begins to mature).  Without any training,
a dragon would have no control over when the smoke and fire
would come bellowing out of their mouth and nostrils.  I'm sure you can
understand when I say that an untrained dragon is definitely difficult to be around!

Lil Puff Puffing and learning how to breath fire!
"Lil Puff"

Lil Puff is working really hard on getting his breathing right.
It won't be long until he masters it!

Of course, all dragons must also learn to fly.
Once they have learned to manage their take-offs and landings,
they do a series of touch-and-goes before being allowed
to try it outside of the safe confines of the nursery.
If you will notice, the floor here is much softer than it looks!
This helps cut down on the number of skinned knees
during the learning process.

Let's ask Lil Puff if he will demonstrate his touch-n-goes for us!

"Lil Puff"

*Grin* I think he likes the idea of taking a break from his fire breathing lessons to do some
touch-and-goes for us!  You can tell that he has been practicing hard
and has it down pretty well.

Every young dragon looks forward with eager anticipation
to their first free flight (outside the safety of the Lair and Nursery).
Dragons simply love to fly and the first free flight marks
a right of passage for Dragons.
Nome, our head flying coach has said that Lil Puff is ready for his first free flight!
If you will wander over to the "Dragons in Flight" page, I think Norm will take you to watch!

I hope you enjoyed your visit to our nursery!
