Jake

Greetings Mortal one!  So you wish to know the secrets of our Lair?
Why don't you pull up that rock over there and have a seat for a few minutes.
Lareese will be along shortly to start the tour.
Would you like a bit of Dragon history while we wait?

You know,  most of the stories you hear about us are, ummm, not quite accurate.

Sure, we can be fierce and we can fight when we need to,
but we prefer not to!
Surprised?

We are NOT the blood-thirsty monsters that western history makes us out to be.
We don't take sacrifices, burn villages or drag ships off the edge of the world.

We have been around since the world was young and yes,
despite popular opinion, we do indeed exist.

Back when the storytellers began to spin their tales of Dragons as Monstrous Beasts,
many a young lad came in search of the title: Dragon Slayer.
Imagine the surprise of these young lads when we greeted them with friendship instead of tremendous roars and fire!

Friendship you ask?  Yes, Friendship!  But they could hardly return to their people with tales of friendly dragons and so they themselves began to spin outrageous stories of battles with us which earned them their desired title.

As the years wore on, the lads that came to challenge us began to change.
They were so filled with fear from the stories they had heard that they were
no longer willing to accept our friendship and began to insist upon a fight.
While we will fight when we need to, we don't find it very enjoyable.
It was decided that the time had come to take drastic action...
We moved!

We left our century old homes and went into hiding.
Granted, it was hard to hide but not for the reasons that you are probably thinking of.
Being magical beings, hiding is not hard for us but leaving our homes was.
Being friendly and curious creatures, it was also somewhat difficult
to change the patterns and habits that we had lived with so long.
We had to carefully pick and choose those that we would befriend...

When history began to claim we didn't exist, we didn't argue.
It made it much easier for us if people stopped searching.
As far as the world was concerned, we moved from the realm of reality
to the realms of fiction and fantasy, myth and legend.

Ahh, you wonder why our bones aren't scattered through history for your archeologists to find?
There are species that tend to go to a specific place to die (like your Elephant Graveyards).
Dragons do this as well.  Not exactly a "graveyard" though that would be your name for it...
We have a special and mystical place that we go when our time has come.
If a Dragon passes into the Great Hereafter before reaching our eternal grounds,
the members of the Lair take it upon themselves to make the sacred journey
and take the remains to the sacred mountain.

Guardians?  Oh sure, we have been guardians of things throughout history...
gold, gems, wisdom, secrets, passageways...
and yes, this has also been the subject of many legends, but I must remind you that you can't believe all that you hear.
We didn't make good guardians because we are fierce but because we are wise and magical...
but that is an entirely different story!

Ahh!  There is Lareese!  I have enjoyed talking with you! Come back sometime and we can talk some more, but for now, if you will head on over to that door, Lareesse will let you in and give you a tour of the nursery!
